You are located at 15 degrees North. What is the altitude of Polaris in the sky?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please help!!!!

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

What class is this?

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Just asking. I want to see if I can help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

geosystems

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Polaris' altitude above the northern horizon is approximately equal to your latitude. Positive latitudes are north of the equator, South of the equator latitudes are negative, which mean Polaris' altitude is negative below the equator. Polaris is never seen below the equator. Polaris alt ≈ your latitude At the north pole Polaris is at your zenith, altitude 90° latitude +80°, Polaris altitude 80° latitude +70°, Polaris altitude 70° latitude +60°, Polaris altitude 60° latitude +50°, Polaris altitude 50° latitude +40°, Polaris altitude 40° latitude +30°, Polaris altitude 30° etc. If Polaris was exactly on the celestial north pole the relationship would be exact

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

With this said - do you understand a little now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not at all. Would it be 15 degrees South?

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Yes. :-)

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Oh, and just a tip - I think you would have better luck asking this question in either biology, earth science (im not sure if ther is a subject for that), physics, or chemistry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got another question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When a person travels by plane west to east in the northern hemisphere, what is the shortest path travelled? would it be a line curving south or north?

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

0.0 Never heard a question like THAT before.Based on research it seems that if you are going go toward the north you should curve towards the north in the Northern Hemisphere, and towards the south in the Southern Hemisphere.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha IKR! Thank you for your help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got another question =|

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

You are welcome - a pleasure. Oh, and bring it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If your location is -80 (latitude) and +20 longitude, which two hemispheres would you be in?

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Okay - well this is how I would do it: I put the longitude and latitude in Google Maps and sicne I have the Eastern and Wetsern Hemisphere memorized - I will know which one it is in. So let me do that now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have this online quiz that is timed. I only have a minute to answer it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please hurry. Sorry about the rush! and thank you again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

59 seconds!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh crap.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 seconds!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and time.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

OKAY. OMG OMG OMG. UM....EAST EATS

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

T_T

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

I have let my own client down...T_T

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL. it's all good. thank you for your help though! geosystems suck! haha

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Oh there is actually a subject for geography. You should ask there next time. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i failed the quiz lo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is geosystems not geography

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha i know but i panicked because of the timed quiz!!

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

:-O Oh...well, I think it would be better than asking it in math. Wait - what grade is this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

O.O I am only in ninth. Wow I am Smart. :-D I usually help people that are like one year ahead of me and one time I helped this girl in College doing a course called simple algebra or something - but since college is what you learned in high school
