What is the linking verb in the sentence? The guard stayed alert through the long, cold hours of the night. A. hours B. alert C. stayed D. through

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its stayed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I suppose it's stayed.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im just not saying its through because the root word stay is a linking verb. and alert is a verb. to be alert, to stay alert, they stayed alert, they are staying alert. etc.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup I think it's stayed, almost 100%, let us know poster

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Hours is not a verb and therefore not possible. Alert can be a verb, but in this use it is an adjective or noun. As a verb it means to warn. Stayed can be a verb. Through is a preposition and therefore not possible. A linking verb does not express action. To stay is an action, so it seems like it can be that, which is why people are confused about it. But if you look at the examples here: http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/linkingverb.htm You will see feels in feels sleepy and turned in turned green ARE linking verbs! This is that sort of situation. While a person can stay, this is linking because it is tying together the guard to what he was: alert.
