3x(y+2)-y(x+4)

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Alright thank you for posting it. Now, what does the question ask you to do with that equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

simplify it

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Alright well first you'll want to open up the brackets. What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y2 and x4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am so confused!!!!

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

mmss, when you open up a bracket, you will have to multiply everything in the bracket with the thing immediately outside the bracket. For example, the first expression you have 3x(y+2). Open up the brackets, so you multiply y AND +2 with 3x. So you get 3xy+6x. Do you understand how that works? Now try it with the second brackets you have.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it will be 3xy+12?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Not really. See for the second part you have -y(x+4) Open up the brackets and try to follow what I said. What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 1 I multiplied 3x times -y and added 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do I do with the -y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I multiply 3 and -y or x? What about the 4??? :(

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Here, let me try demonstrating it to you: |dw:1379993425271:dw| Does that make sense?
