Someone help please!! The equation |ax+b|=c must have _________ ? A. Only one solution B. 1 or 2 solution C. 0,1,2 solution D. 0,1 or an infinite number of solutions HELP !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c

OpenStudy (anteater):

Do they state that c is positive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anteater):

If they make a point of saying that c is positive, then I believe that B would actually be the answer. I am trying to think of a situation in which there would be no solutions if c is positive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if \(c\) is negative there are no solutions if \(c=0\) there is one solution if \(c>0\) there are two solutions

OpenStudy (anteater):

Yes, I agree with what satellite73 said. :)

OpenStudy (anteater):

Although, zero is neither positive nor negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok makes sense so it's c or b

OpenStudy (anteater):

If they did not say that c is positive, then I would say choice C

OpenStudy (anteater):

But if they specified that c is positive, I would go with B

OpenStudy (anteater):

Wait a minute!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now I'm confused

OpenStudy (anteater):

That's because I think the directions are unclear. Does the whole problem say just what you wrote at first, or do they give you additional information about c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope that's everything

OpenStudy (anteater):

If they don't come right out and say that c is positive, then c can be positive, negative, or zero. :)

OpenStudy (anteater):

So, then, the answer would be C.

OpenStudy (anteater):

Since if c is negative, no number has an absolute value that is negative. (no solution)

OpenStudy (anteater):

If c is 0, there is one solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanks sooo much

OpenStudy (anteater):

And if c is positive, then ax + b can equal c or -c , since both of those would have an absolute value of c :)

OpenStudy (anteater):

I hope that was not confusing! Sometimes my brain doesn't come up with the best wording. ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's fine it made perfect sense :) thanks everybody
