Simplify -|-5 + 2|. -4 1 4

OpenStudy (shamil98):

-|-5+2| = -|-3| absolute zero makes the -3 positive = -(3) = -3

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

keep in mind that, anything inside the bars | ... |, will always come out as a positive value

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

see any absolute real number turns into positive all the time

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

so you want to do the operation first, then apply the absolute example: -3 | -2 + 7| I would solve -2 + 7 first 5 then apply the absolute which is 5 then -3 (5) -15

I just want to say thanks for y'all's help! I'm very new to this type of math and u guys have made it very fun and enjoyable for me to do with the help :) Once more thanks!

OpenStudy (shamil98):

I answered -.-

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

another example -3 | -2 + -7| solve whatever is inside the bars first -2 + - 7 gives you -2 - 7 turns to -9 absolute value of -9 is 9 -3 (9) =-27

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ shamil98. Yes, I know u did. just wanted to say thanks for your help too :)

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

see, the way I see it is that give them a different example to solve so they don't just end up copying your final answer in this manner, you would know if they understood the concept or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

writing this stuff down.

hartnn (hartnn):

i concur with nin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay!! thanks! The examples helped!
