I need to make an equation

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

notice how as x increases by 2 each time, y increases by 1 each time so rise = 1 run = 2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

slope = rise/run = ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

close, it should be 1/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now use the first row in the table to see that x = 1, y = -12 y = mx + b y = (1/2)x + b ... plug in the given slope -12 = (1/2)(1) + b ... plug in x = 1 and y = -12 -12 = 1/2 + b b = ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

algebra 1 need simpler terms please!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which steps aren't making sense?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what I did was start with y = mx + b this is the general slope intercept equation

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

then I plugged in m = 1/2 x = 1 y = -12

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

slope = m = -11 --12 / 3 -1 = 1/2 b = y -mx b = -11 - (1/2)*3 b = -11 -1.5 b = -12.5 b = y -mx y = b + mx y = -12.5 + .5x
