Some opponents of the theory of evolution dismiss the ideas as being "just a theory." Why is this NOT a very good argument against the theory of evolution?

Because in science, theories are proven. In everyday English, we use the word "theory" as another word for "educated guess." But in science, when we say "theory," we're talking about something that was proven, one way or another. It's not just an "educated guess." An educated guess is called a "hypothesis."

I would not use the word "proven". Scientific theories cannot be proven, but can only be disproved. This nature of science is proposed by Karl Popper. Scientific theories are claims supported by conclusive empirical data (such as observations).
