Can anyone help me with Rational Functions?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Yes if we know what the question is :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay! ok. here is my dilemma. I dont have a textbook for my math class and our teacher just gave us questions to answer without any explanations. This is what he gave us: 1. The parent function 1/x has a vertical asymptote and a horizontal asymptote that intersect at the origin (0, 0). Give an equation for a rational function that has a horizontal asymptote on the x-axis and a vertical asymptote not on the y-axis.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so... how much do you recall about asymptotes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not much. I haven't been in math for a few years now.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

|dw:1380235588698:dw| the asymptotes, is a place in the graph, where the function goes on and on and never reaches like above, the asymptotes will be at x = -5, x = -1, x = 1, those are vertical asymptotes, that is, a point, the graph seems to be going towards but never getting there the horizontal asymptote above will be where y = 1, why? because the line seems to come from above and going down and down and down, yet never reaching the 1
