3 + a = y is the same as y = 3 + a. This is an example of which algebraic property?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

commutative property of addition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

I dont think it is commutative says a+b=b+a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you sure?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

yes im sure but im not sure what one they are asking for maybe its this if a = b the b = a this property is called symmetry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe this site will be more helpful http://www.mathsisfun.com/associative-commutative-distributive.html

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

that site does not have the property that is being used here it is not commutative because it has 3+a in the same order (not a+3) its not associative of distributive.... it is the "symmetric property of equality"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh my apology

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

its more of a "relation" property than an "algebraic" property but.... http://library.thinkquest.org/2647/algebra/post.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Very good, thank you sir.
