a = 1 b = 4 c = 2 \[x = (-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac})/2a\] So plug in a, b, and c. \[x = (-4 \pm \sqrt{4^2-8})/2\] \[x = (-4 \pm \sqrt{16-8})/2\] \[x = (-4 \pm \sqrt{8})/2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For + \[x = (-4 + \sqrt{4 \times 2})/ 2\] \[x = (-4 + 2\sqrt{2})/2\] \[x= -2 +\sqrt{2}\] For - \[x = (-4 - \sqrt{4 \times 2})/ 2\] \[x = (-4 - 2\sqrt{2})/2\] \[x= -2 -\sqrt{2}\]

So your answer is \[x = -2 \pm \sqrt{2}\]
