need help on the preterite, irregular verbs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you know if it is irregular or not, i'm really confused.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Okay. First I want to tell you that when ever you need help, you can just tag me or message me. Now, this is the definition of irregular verbs. Irregular verbs are verbs that don't follow the regular ending for their verb group. Verb groups are AR verbs, such as "estar", ER verbs, such as "beber", and IR verbs, such as "ir". Let me give you some examples. Traer. To bring. This is an ER verb. Now, how do you say "I Bring"? Yo traigo. <--See. It went from ae to ai.

The thing is does the endings always change for different types of irregular verbs, or is there a pattern I can relate to and learn, which might help me more. I have verb tests for spanish but I don't know how to change them. Also is this the present tense?
