Factor completely: 3x2 − x − 4 (3x − 1)(x + 4) (3x + 4)(x − 1) (3x − 2)(x + 2) (3x − 4)(x + 1)

@DebbieG

OpenStudy (debbieg):

\(3x^2 − x − 4=(???)(???)\) Just use a little bit of trial and error, this one shouldn't be that hard. You have a 3 as the leading coefficient, so you know that the first terms inside the parens has to be 3x in one, and x in the other (do you see why???) You have a -4 for the last term, so the last terms have to be either 2,2 with opposite signs, or 1,4 with opposite signs.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Well, try c - CHECK it by FOIL multiplying it out. (3x − 2)(x + 2) = ? what do you get? Do you get what you started with? (show each step)

OpenStudy (debbieg):

clearly the first term ("F") and the last term ("L") will be correct. So what do you get from the "O" and "I" terms? What do you end up with for the middle term?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(3x+4)(x-1) @DebbieG

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont have time to show everything :/

@DebbieG ???
