5(8-7) - 7(5-8) =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5-7(-3)=5+21=26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

BIDMAS Start with what's in the Brackets, then go to the Multiplications finally do the Subtraction

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@stats90 How did you simply get 21? Isn't it supposed to be -21?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5(1)-7(-3) 5+21= 26 <-- Ans

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

How did you get positive 21?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-7*-3=+21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Double Negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5(1)-7(-3)=26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Two negative signs multiply to make a poitive +*+ or -*- = + -*+ or +*- = -

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So it was. Negative 7! Ok jus to clarify if I subtract on these types of equations, it is supposed to be a negative? And what does double negative mean? 😀

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im not sure whats confusing you so I'll try to explain this problem abit more maybe it helps you out; \[5(8-7)-7(5-8)\] Solve the brackets first; \[8-7=1\] and \[5-8=-3\] Now we have; \[(5*1)-(7*-3)\] \[5-(-21)\] Here is the DOUBLE Negative \[5+21\] Becomes POSITIVE \[26\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Thank you so much.
