Find the equation of the line through (1,5) that is parallel to y+4x=7. Do the same for the perpendicular line as well.

OpenStudy (matt101):

First rearrange the equation into slope/y-intercept form (y = mx + b). In this case it would be y = -4x+7. A parallel line will have the same slope as that line, while a perpendicular line would have a slope that is the negative reciprocal, in this case 1/4. You have the slope and the x and y coordinates, so just plug those into the general equation and solve for b (the y-intercept)!

@matt101 so would the parallel line be y=-4x+9? Would the perpendicular line be y=1/4x+4.75?

OpenStudy (matt101):

Yup you got it!
