So a mixture is just like salt and water. The stuff was salt before and is still salt after you put it in the water. You can test this by tasting it before and after you put it in the water. Water itself is a compound made up of hydrogen and oxygen, H2O. You breathe in oxygen and need it to live. Try breathing in water to test this one out, and you will realize the stark difference between a mixture and a compound. You see, the oxygen and hydrogen molecules are arranged in a basically unseparable way by covalent bonds, and to separate them out into explosive hydrogen and oxygen gas you can simply send an electric current through them to see bubbles come out. Remember, water puts out fires, but fires can't burn without oxygen.
