Let me be one of the few people that can keep an open mind on the subject, while still being informed. First off I know a lot about this subject as I am a Lieutenant with the United States Coast Guard, and I am attending the United States Coast Guard Academy. My pay has been put on hold, because YES the GOVERNMENT DID SHUT DOWN. But at this time it is just partial, but if the Senate can not put their differences aside and pass a bill a lot more will shut down. The military, federal law enforcement, Food and Drug Administration, and basic Center for Disease control employees will still operate as normal. The Federal Communications Commission, State Department, Embassies, Federal Law Enforcement Training Academies, General Services Administration, and other agencies not directly correlated with Public safety will be closed. Hope this helps, and people I really hope you guys can learn to keep an open mind.

For a detailed list of what was effected by the shutdown, you can also reference this list here based on plans the government drew up in case something like this happened again: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/2013-shutdown-federal-department-impact/?hpid=z1 It's also not the first time the government shut down -- it's the 18th time that it's happened according to this list which also covers why each one happened: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/09/25/here-is-every-previous-government-shutdown-why-they-happened-and-how-they-ended/ The reasons are also pretty varied. Even when Dems and Republicans owned both the Senate and the House, there were still disagreements inside their own parties over certain issues that tied up government and resulted in temporary shutdowns. One of the reasons that everyone is particularly worried about this one is because of the concern on raising the debt ceiling by the 17th when the Treasury will be up against the wall to pay debt. If you don't know what that is, the short short short explanation of the ceiling that it sets limits for how much the US can borrow to keep functioning. It's like expanding its credit line. The last time the US had a problem in raising the debt ceiling, the economy took a slight hit when it was downgraded last year. And that was only when there was a delay in raising it. People are worried that the same might happen here, or worse, that the US might actually default. Economists are worried that if the US ever defaults on its debt ceiling, it'll cause an even bigger hit to the economy that will ripple throughout the world. Any problems that hit the US economy are bound to cause trouble elsewhere, so the world is watching to see what happens here.
