A medal will be given out to the person who can help me with the questions that I have

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

Here is the 1st problem: 3(x+4)-5(-1)<5

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

It is an inequality

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

K I will make sure to do that next time. Thank you for telling me @Hero -Comm.Dan

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'll get you started 3(x+4)-5(-1)<5 3(x)+3(4)-5(-1)<5 ... distribute 3x+12+5<5 ... multiply 3x+17 < 5 ... combine like terms See how to finish up?

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

Yes, I do. I did the same way as you did above and the problem was marked wrong.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

tell me what you got next

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

|dw:1381000338647:dw| is what I did next

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what algebraic solution did you get

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

|dw:1381000401610:dw|

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

x>-4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

notice in the original problem, the inequality sign is < how did you get a > sign?

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

I switched it because my math teacher told our class that we have to switch the inequality sign no matter which grouping symbol it is.
