What is the graph of the absolute value equation? y = |x – 5| – 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(5,-4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How does that work? I can't figure it out y = –2|x| + 5 I know that y = |x – 5| – 4 |-5| becomes positive so that is 5,-4 but what about y = –2|x| + 5

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to graph y = |x – 5| – 4, you step 1) start with the graph of y = |x| step 2) shift the graph in step 1) five units to the right step 3) then you shift 4 units down

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

y = –2|x| + 5 is the same as y = –2|x - 0| + 5
