5√(x-6) = -20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is no solution. Why is it no solution? How would I go about this?

hartnn (hartnn):

for the simple logical reason, the square root does not yield a negative number..... to actually prove that, first square both sides, find the value of x and then check whether it satisfies the original equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it is a rule?

hartnn (hartnn):

rule or not, here you can prove that by getting the value of x and verifying..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, I would divide by 5, square it, and then solve for x?

hartnn (hartnn):

when you square it, you are attaching an extraneous solution

hartnn (hartnn):

and yes, do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\sqrt{x-6} = -4\] \[x-6 = 4^{2}\] \[x-6 = 16\] x = 22

hartnn (hartnn):

good!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! I get it now! If I plug in this value for the original equation, it won't work.

hartnn (hartnn):

exactly! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^
