Two consecutive odd integers have a sum of 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

consecutive odd integers can be represented by (2x+1) and (2x+3) If x is an integer, 2x would be an even one; therefore, 2x+1 would always be odd. It follows that 2x+3 would be the next consecutive odd integer So... (2x+1)+(2x+3) = 0 THEN SOLVE!

Guess and check works fairly well for this sort of problem, if you're taking the ACT for example and don't have time to solve.

Improvement "Lite" Define 2x +1 and 2x - 1 as your consecutive odd integers. Solution is immediate. Improvement "Massive" Consecutive odd integers. If they are both positive, zero will never result from a sum. If they are both negative, zero will never result from a sum. How many consecutive odd integers can you imagine where one is positive and the other negative? Done.
