Of the eleven listed techniques for better understanding poetry, which two do you feel will help you better understand and enjoy poetry?
What are the listed techniques?
• Look at the poem’s title: What might this poem be about? • Read the poem straight through without stopping .This will help you get a sense of how it sounds, how it works, what it might be about. • Start with what you know. Then underline or highlight the parts you don't understand. •Write a quick “first-impression” of the poem by answering the question, “What is this poem about?” • Look for patterns. Watch for repeated, interesting, or even unfamiliar words images, colors or sounds. Ask yourself, “What is the poet trying to show through this pattern?” • Look for changes in tone, focus, narrator, structure, or patterns. Ask: “Has anything changed? If so, what does the change mean?” • Identify the narrator. Ask, "Who is speaking in the poem?" "What do you know about the speaker?" • Check for new understanding. Re-read the poem (aloud, if you can) from start to finish, underlining (again) those portions you do not understand. Explain the poem to yourself or someone else. • Find the crucial moments. The pivotal moment might be as small as the word but or yet. Such words often act like hinges within a poem to swing the poem in a whole new direction. Also pay attention to breaks between stanzas or between lines. • Look for unusual use of capitalization, punctuation (or lack of any), or type. Ask, “Why is the poet using this unusual form?” • Check for improved understanding. Read the poem through again, aloud if possible. You should have a much better understanding of the poem.
AND HERE IS THE ACTUAL QUESTION SORRY**** Of the eleven listed techniques for better understanding poetry, which two do you feel will help you better understand and enjoy poetry? Why? Be specific. Make sure your answer is at least five sentences in length.
Check for new understanding. Re-read the poem (aloud, if you can) from start to finish, underlining (again) those portions you do not understand. Explain the poem to yourself or someone else. I believe that through re-reading the poem aloud helps me better understand the rhythm and also detail I did not see before. I believe that by explaining the poem to someone else/myself increases my understanding and joy for it. I think that when I can understand the poem in more detail, I can enjoy the poem more. I believe that I can enjoy it more when I can hear myself read it and actually hear the rhythm and beauty of it. Reading the entire poem through the second time helps the reader become connected. What I mean by connected is that the readers emotions grasp onto the poem and the person finds meanings that were not there before.
