which one do you think it is?
OpenStudy (e.mccormick):
\(f(-3)\) means replace x with (-3) and then evaluate it (do the math part).
OpenStudy (anonymous):
idk, i need help understanding it. If someone could explain how to do it that would be great :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
12?
OpenStudy (e.mccormick):
You are given
\(f(x)=|2x+1|+5\) If you replace the x wih (-3) it is not 12.

hold on, let me try again.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
0?
OpenStudy (e.mccormick):
\(f(-3)=|2(-3)+1|+5\)
So what is \(2\times (-3)\) then add 1 to that. Then take the absolute value. Then finally add 5.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thats 0?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thats what i got

Are you remembering the absolute value?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
wait -10?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i was doing the math on a calculator.
OpenStudy (e.mccormick):
OK. Do the math up to the | | on the calculator. Then change anything you have to a postitive. Then go on from there.

Yep.
The big key is the | | turns everything inside it into a positive.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Thank you :)
