Factor 9X^2 -3X -2

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Do you know synthetic division yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

don't think so

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

This is honestly, easy to factor, you just gotta know the terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what are the terms? how do you find them?

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Find multiples of the 9 and 2, including the signs. So 9 is just 3*3 and 9*1 2 is just 2*1

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Now plug that into: (__x +/- __)*(__x +/- __)

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Actually, it factors into: (3x-2)(3x+1) Do you understand why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Well the 9 breaks down into 3*3, so we have to use that because 9*1 would make any number way too big. And 2 is just 2*1. So from here it's just trial and error. plus the -2 at the end indicated a + and -. When you've been through years of math this kind of stuff becomes second nature to you. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. thxs

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

No problem, and sorry I can't give a more detailed explanation :/
