An airplane with a 200-passenger capacity is to be chartered for a flight to Nevada. The airplane cannot be chartered unless there are at least 150 passengers. The cost of the trip is $540 per passenger, except that the airline company agrees to reduce everyone’s ticket price by $2 for each ticket sold in excess of 150. Let x be the number of tickets sold in excess of 150 (i.e. 156 tickets sold means x = 6) and let f(x) be the total ticket income that the company will receive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a) Write a function that expresses the total ticket income. b) How much income will the company generate if they sell 160 tickets? c) How many tickets does the company want to sell to maximize the income?

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

hi, for the first one.. if the company sells only 150 tickets..... what will be the income ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

540x150?

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

yep!! but now the company is selling more than 150... but they r giving a discount.. what is the price of a ticket after u reach the limit 150 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

538?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=50?

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

nope !! x can't be fifty... x is lesser than or equal to 50...

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

'cause we don't know what will be the value of "x"

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

so... the income = 540x150 + (538*x) now write this as a function.. got it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the function?

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

nope the function is.. f(x) = (540x150) + 538x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh ok i see it

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

now .. wt u should do to get the answer for second one ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x)=(540x150) +538x10?

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

yeahh!! u got it!! now ... do u have any idea abt the last one ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(540x150)+538x10=86380?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the company needs to sell the plane full of tickets which is 200?

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

yep !! u r correct!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really?
