@mightBEyourTEACHER The principle of checks and balances is a very important concept in the government of the United States. How does the legislative branch check the judicial branch? A. By impeaching judges B. By issuing pardons C. By suggesting bills D. By overriding vetoes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, the Legislative Branch is Congress. The Judicial Branch is the courts/judges/justices. Only one of those choices has anything to do with the Judicial branch and the legislative branch....which one do you think it is?

a

or d

Issuing pardons is a right reserved for the President - he can literally let people out of jail, which is a check that the Executive Branch has on the Judicial Branch (and, in a way, on itself, but that's not really important...this is the wrong answer). Suggesting a bill (a bill is a potential law - or an idea for a law) can be done by anyone, but only a member of congress can formally introduce it to the floor of congress. I believe this answer choice is referencing the President's ability to publicly recommend bills to congress using the media. That would be a check/balance that the Executive Branch has on the Legislative Branch. A veto is a rejection of a bill by the President - basically the president says no to a potential law that Congress has passed and sent to him. Congress has the ability to override a veto with a 2/3rds majority vote and make a bill a law without the President's signature. This is a check the Legislative branch has on the Executive Branch. Finally, Judges must be appointed by the President and approved by the Senate. If they are accused of a crime or of abusing the power of their office (but not of being a bad judge) they can be impeached, which means they will face a trial in Congress and could potentially be removed from office. This is a check that the Legislative Branch has on the Judicial Branch.

so d

Nope...I put my explanations in a different order than the answer choices to force you to read all of them. Because I'm evil like that :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...it's A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it seemed like d though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D is talking about overriding vetoes, that is something that Congress does to the President - it has nothing to do with the Judicial branch. The President is the head of the Executive Branch.

ooo ok
