the units need to be consistent on both sides of the equality. that means that since the unit of s is feet, the unit of (1/2)gt^2 must also be feet \[ft = \frac{ 1 }{ 2 } g s^2 = \frac{ 1 }{ 2 }\left( \frac{ ft }{ s^2 } \right)s^2\] the s^2 cancel out and both sides have the onsistent unit of feet
