The characteristics of a myth are very interesting. A myth is a story that is told to be a true explanation of how the world came to be. Characteristics include non-human creatures such as gods, goddesses, supernatural beings, or mystical "first people." The plot may involve two worlds, our present world or a supernatural world. In this way, myths highlight basic human behaviors that are essential in any setting or situation. Myths also depict events that bend, warp, or break natural laws. They evoke mystery and the unknown and are formed of differences such as good vs. bad, light vs. dark, and so on. This magnifies the super-naturalness of the mythical world. Myths seek to answer questions such as why we are here, where did we come from, what is our purpose, etc. The settings of myths are typically ancient, set before actual records were being kept. The settings are in a world much like our own, but with supernatural places and creatures. Individualism, family and community values are often instilled in mythical heroes. All myths depict a sense of mystery and the unknown. Complete opposites such as night/day, good/evil, etc., often play important roles in the myth's plot. Mythical heroes are often very sophisticated storytellers with an emphasis on language. They are often metaphoric; created to comment of analyze a real world even. Questions pertaining to the real world that myths often attempt to answer are - Who are we? - Why are we here? - What is our purpose? - Why are we living?
