OpenStudy (doggy):

Can somebody explain pi to me? I learned this last year but forgot :x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pi is a very general number that comes up in many places in mathematics. It happens to be the ratio of the diameter to the circumference in a circle, but that is just one of its properties. It is one of several fundamental values in the universe, including 0, 1, -1, e, i, and the golden ration phi, among others. Pi just keeps cropping up, as these other fundamental numbers do, everywhere. For example, if you generalize the idea of factorials (n!) to include all numbers, not just integers, then -1/2 factorial turns out to be the square root of pi.
