If the length of the minute hand of the clock in London commonly known as “Big Ben” is 11.25’ from the center of the clock to the tip of the hand, what is the area swept out by the minute hand as it moves 5 minutes of time? A) 10.55 ft2 B) 28.13 ft2 C) 33.13 ft2 D) 66.27 ft2

OpenStudy (ranga):

You know the radius (r = 11.25'). Can you tell me the area of the circle first?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

the Area "swept" by the minute hand, is the Arc made by the minute hand, so you want the Arc's length

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm... maybe... they... mean..... ahemm square units.... so ... ok the Area will be square units, thus you'd want the Sector of the Circle then for that angle with that radius

OpenStudy (ranga):

Find the area of the whole circle first. If the minute hand makes one full rotation it would have completed 60 minutes and swept out the entire area of the circle. But if the minute hand just swept 5 minutes, it would have swept 5/60 of the circle or 1/12. So the area of the circle divided by 12 will give you the answer.
