If you get a minor cut in the laboratory, you should wash the injured area with water for 60 seconds under cold water, then allow it to bleed for a short period of time. True or false?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Depends on the instructions given by your instructor. It should be on the syllabus. In our case, we were just told to notify the instructor and depending on what type of cut it was, it would determine the amount of time. Hope that helps!(:

False! Open wounds are always prone to infection in a science lab where there are chemicals around able to enter the wound! Especially if you're working in a biology lab where they may be bacteria or cultures flying around. Its easy for something to easily latch itself on and invade your body.

I'm not saying that's not true because you're right, you're totally prone to infection in a lab but she's asking about the amount of time. If you get a minor scratch, you just need to notify the instructor. It would probably only be like a couple minutes of rinsing and a band aid.

Refer to your safety protocol. Report to your teacher or direct supervisor whenever an injury occurs. It really depends on the circumstances of the injury. Rinsing with water is generally a good idea. Allowing a cut to bleed wouldn't provide a benefit with a minor cut. So I would pick false for this answer. I'm sure you were instructed what to do and this question is a matter of recalling that instruction. However, if a puncture wound occurs, it may help to let it bleed as this may flush bacteria out of the wound that were introduced upon puncture.
