Can someone help me work this out 'cause i don't get it. Simplify. (–12x) ÷ (–2)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large (-12x) ÷ (-2)\) \(\large \frac{-12x}{-2}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 1/12x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how man times does 2 go into 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now how many negatives are in the expression?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if you have 2 negatives in a multiplication or division problem what happens?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they cancel out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm they cancel out sorry my computer froze

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and division is just how many times the number on the bottom goes into the number on top so if its -12x/-2 then it comes out to 6x

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Remember this: + +. =. + - - = + +. - = - +=positive -= ngative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you work it in reverse then its 6x times -2 which equals...?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Is the answer 6x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Figured

OpenStudy (anonymous):
