Please help. i dont think im doing these two problems correctly. 5-y ≥ 4 1. What is the solution set? a. [1≥-∞) b. (1>-∞) c. (1<∞) d. (1≤-∞) 2. Which represents the given compound inequality in interval notation? x > 8 or x ≤ 4 a. x E (-∞, 4) U [8,∞ ) b. x E (-4, 8] c. x E [-4,8) d. x E (-∞, -4] U (8,∞)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did u do so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay well i subtracted 5 from the left and did the same on the right, then i got y is greater than or equal to -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

notice y is -y, so u also divide -1 to both side to make the y positive and to isolate it so i would be y>=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but wouldnt u flip the sign after dividing by -1?

hartnn (hartnn):

be careful, when you divide by a negative quantity, you flip the sign

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? whhyd u delete it

hartnn (hartnn):

so, it'll be x<=1 can you find the correct option now ? i mistyped it as -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay :D n yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need help with the second one too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u do the same thing u did to the first equation to find x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so add 4 to -5 and 2?

hartnn (hartnn):

2nd Q is this : 2. Which represents the given compound inequality in interval notation? x > 8 or x ≤ 4 a. x E (-∞, 4) U [8,∞ ) b. x E (-4, 8] c. x E [-4,8) d. x E (-∞, -4] U (8,∞) right ? x>8, means from 8 to infinity excluding 8 and can be written as (8, ∞) ( or ) means excluding, [ or ] means including so, x<=4 means including 4 , so (-∞, -4]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no this is a differnt problem x is greater than 8 so u should have (8, inf) and x is <= 4 so that equals (-inf, 4) just combine them with U sign

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o wait wrong problem.. nvm that last message

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the four should have a closing bracket like @hartnn said since the sign is >=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its a? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

hartnn (hartnn):

correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so much you guys :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

quick question??

hartnn (hartnn):

yes ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am on a different problem and it says 7 greatter tha x + 5 or x 2 greater than or equal to 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since it has OR inbetween the two.. would it incluce an putside down U ?

hartnn (hartnn):

it would be U only, U = union = OR upside down U = intersection =AND

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so reg U?

hartnn (hartnn):

7 greatter tha x + 5 or x 2 greater than or equal to 3 = 7>(x+5) U x2>=3
