Well, you have to consider the world before the revolutions and the enlightenment. A horrible world, where only the riches decided everything in a country, used the poor - both financially and physically (labour), despotic kings etc. The Enlightenment philosophers came up with ideas of how to form a new society, with wider rights (for the common man), equality, democracy etc. I think it was Montesquieu who came up with the idea of Separation of powers, and some other french people came up with the idea of having a government that represented the people (through voting) rather than themselves and their families. Such ideas about how to form a more just society came with these people - also Rousseau's dream of the perfect, nature-like state, with equality, and no one above another. This thoughts started to make sense to people. People felt that one entered a society to have it better than one would in a state of nature, where everyone was against everyone. A civilized society should make it safer and better for every. However, they saw that this was not the case at present. It only benefitted the rich, making them richer. And then came the philosophers with ideas of how to form a better, juster society. This first arrived to America. When people saw how it worked, more and more started writing in defense of revolutions and the new way of society, which, in turn, led to the French revolution. As to how they influenced education: Both Montesquieu and Voltaire (I think) liked the idea of a despotic (but just) king ruling in a Enlightened Absolutism, which meant that the king would be influenced by the enlightenment and support it, with education, free press, freedom of speech, science etc, and embrace reason. This was meant to be spread throughout the country, to everyone. However, religion was also kind of important here. Not only did the philosophers who was much against religion want to spread reason and education, but so did also many religious. I know at least here in Norway (which was ruled by a despotic king), the king was pietist, who wanted to spread the Bible throughout his two countries. But for this to happen, one had to make people read. So he decided that school should be a must for every child. It was only meant to teach people how to read, but many paid the teachers to teach them how to do maths and also write ... But again, when it comes to 'real' education, such as science, philosophy, social studies, maths, reading, writing, and everything else, it was really the enlightened philosophers who were the force behind. enough Info right??
