If you are looking for the width of a shape would that also be considered the base?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you're looking at a perfectly equalized shape like a square or rectangle, then yes, you can use the base. If it's a trapezoid, or a circle or a shape that doesn't hold the same shape from top to bottom then it's width is constantly changing.

what if you are looking at a triangle is the width the same as the base?

If it exactly states "What is the width of its base?" then yes. But it vaguely asks what's it width, I would say it's constantly changing. It really depends on how your question is based. If you're unsure on a question, it's best to ask the teacher, as I don't know what you're working on.
