OpenStudy (mwhit2101):

Why did the Mayan and Incan civilizations end?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Spanish Conquistadores brought smallpox and other European diseases with them when they came ashore and these diseases quickly decimated the population, allowing the Spaniards to take control of what was left of the ruined society. The Incas were weakened, making it easier to the Spanish to overthrown them

Just to add to Gerardie's correct answer, this also affected the Aztecs as well after they were conquered. Many of the indigenous Native American peoples outside of the Incans, Mayans, and Aztecs suffered in this way. The Mayans, on the other hand...no one knows what exactly happened to their civilization. The people were still there in scattered tribes, but their civilization was largely gone by the time the Spanish conquistadors arrived. Scientists now theorize that climate changes and a long, extended drought eventually forced their cities to be abandoned and their society to fragment and collapse. The Mayan civ was long dead by the time the Aztecs rose up as the top power in the region.
