Which polynomial is a perfect square trinomial? 9x2 − 12x + 4 36b2 − 24b + 16 16x2 − 24x − 9 4a2 − 10a − 25

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

perfect square trinomial: x^2 - 2xy + y^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what exactly is a perfect square?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

16 is a perfect square because 4*4 = 16 9 is a perfect square because 3*3 = 9 6 is not a perfect square because there is not integer multiplied by itself that gives you 6

What is a polynomial? @jigglypuff314

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

suffix -nomial means function with one or more variables prefix poly- means two or more so polynomial means a function with two or more variables

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x2 − 12x + 4

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is the answer B?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

9x^2-12x+4 is the correct answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x2 − 12x + 4 so it's like 9 times 2 is 18 -12 and that's 6 plus 4 is 10? and 10 is a perfect square?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

10 is not a perfect square perfect square trinomial: x^2 - 2xy + y^2 meaning: x*x - 2xy + y*y 9x^2 - 12x + 4 is the correct answer because 3x*3x - 2*3x*2 + 2*2 which fits the format
