I need to find the gradient of the normal to the line segment AB where A is (-1,5) and B is (3,4). AB is a straight line. Help please?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gradient of normal line is just the slope of the line perpendicular to AB. Find the slope of AB, and the gradient of the normal line will be the negative reciprocal of whatever the slope of line AB is.

Thank you! i think I've got it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats your answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got the gradient to be -0.25 for AB

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Slope of AB = -1/4 Gradient of normal line is the negative reciprocal of -1/4, which is 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are correct for slope of AB = -1/4 or -0.25

brilliant, thank you
