Hey guys! Is the Derivative idea similar to a slope?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it is related to slope yes

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if we restrict our concept of a derivative to just a graph, then we can view it as the slope of a tangent line at any given point in the graph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Slope = change y/change of x which is Rise/Run, That is what Derivative explains when looking for a slope a tangent line at a point in a curve. is this correct?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats a good concept of it yes

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in order to define a slope; we require 2 points - a secant line. As the points get closer and closer together, we can approximate the slope at a single point. The notion of a limit has to be established, or algebraic techniques must be able to apply in order to get over the 0/0 issue of subtracting a point from itself
