What is the difference between ser and estar?

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Okay let me just tell you that this is one of the hardest questions there is in Spanish but I can help you. I know that they taught me that "estar" is "to be" and "ser" is "to be". So, it is basically the same thing - is it really? Nope. Here: Dario es divertido, pero hoy esta aburrido.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Basically, that sentence says "Darius is fun, but today he is bored."

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

"es" is from "ser" and "esta" is from "estar:

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

So.. it is saying that IN GENERAL, Darius is fun. But RIGHT NOW, he is bored.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Do you understand?

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Its very hard to explain...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea but I need to know what things i would use ser and estar for.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

You can use ser for explaining how people are in general. Fore example, you would use "ser" for things like: He is serious She is fun He is sympathetic She is ugly He is handsome She is tall He is short etc...

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

You can use "estar" for either explaining how people feel now or explaining where you are for example: I am in Mexico I am in USA I am in Africa He is in Africa We are in Africa I am mad He is sad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thank you is there anything else that you use it for?

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Use what for?
