2|x+2|-1=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2(x+2)-1=5 2x+4-1=5 2x+3=5 2x/2= 2/2 x=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 1, first get \[2|x+2|=6\] then divide by 2 and get \[|x+2|=3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one answer you have, namely \(x=1\) but you also have to solve \[x+2=-3\] to get the second answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, that's what i'm having trouble with. i solved it, but i'm not getting the right answer according to the choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did it the way you showed above and this time i got x=-3 but that's still not right... i don't know what i'm doing wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. x=4 or x=-8 b. x=1 or x=-1 c. x=1 or x=-5 d. x=5 or x=-5 i'm getting nowhere near that???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@e.cociuba can you help?

myininaya (myininaya):

So when you tried to solve x+2=-3 what did you get exactly?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

keep in mind that \(\bf |x+2|=3\implies \begin{cases} +(x+2)=3\\ \quad \\ \bf -(x+2)=3 \end{cases}\) so you'd get 2 values for "x", 1 for each scenario

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, @myininaya so 2|x+2|-1=-5 divide everything by 2 x+2-1=-5 x+2=-6 x=-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i didn't do that right omg i'm so confused

myininaya (myininaya):

-5+1 is not -6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

taylor try wolframalpha.com it can probably help you alot with math

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I think @jdoe0001 gave you a good explanation!

myininaya (myininaya):

but yeah still a little wrong I was just asking you to solve the one equation I gave you since you already found the other solution.

myininaya (myininaya):

x+2=-3

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Do you know how to get to x+2-1=-5 why and how?

myininaya (myininaya):

You already solved x+2=3

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Whatever, you guys do this!

myininaya (myininaya):

Please don't just give the answer.

myininaya (myininaya):

She can do this.

myininaya (myininaya):

2|x+2|-1=5 Isolate the | | part. That means solve for |x+2| like this: Add 1 on both sides. 2|x+2|=6 Divide both sides by 2. |x+2|=3 This means you have x+2=3 or x+2=-3

myininaya (myininaya):

How I'm asking you do is to solve x+2=3 which you already did and got x=1. Now you solve x+2=-3 to get the other solution.

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=2%7Cx%2B2%7C-1%3D5 seriously, if you dont plan on being a mathematician or any thing its ok to use a calculator or a program to help you

myininaya (myininaya):

Yeah wolfram is great once you get a handle on simple algebra.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i suppose your right, but you can also brake down the problem and it will show you step by step how it got the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhh!! so x= -5 x= -5 or x= 1 @myininaya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes ^

myininaya (myininaya):

Yes. Because you subtract 2 on both sides. x+2=-3 x=-3-2=-5 Great.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Futuristicmario thank you so much, i will definitely check it out @myininaya thank you oh my gosh you saved me
