which of the following are most likely factors of the the function graph below A. (x-3)(x+4) B. (x+3)(x-4) C. (x+2)(x-4) D. (x)(x+12)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

What are the zeroes (x-intercepts) on the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it -3 and 4?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Correct. But remember you have to change the signs when you put them into factors like so (x-a)(x-b)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the correct answer would be A ? right ?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Your roots were -3 and 4. Read what i said above and decide if (x-3)(x+4) is correct.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

If your roots are a and b, your factored form would be (x-a)(x-b). If your roots are -a and -b, factored would be (x+a)(x+b).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if its -3 and 4 then it would be (x+3)(x-4) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its the total opposite

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Yes :) you always have to change the signs of the roots when making the factored form. Since if x=-3, then... x+3 = 0 which is your factor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh! okay now i totally get it thank you so much :)
