Which inequality is NOT represented by the graph? 9 + r > -3 -r/4 > 3 2r > - 24 r - 3 > -15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One way to figure it out is to solve for r: r > -12. Then see which of the options makes sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where is the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh . . . sorry, I thought the first inequality was the graph. but it doesn't change the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ans is b

OpenStudy (ranga):

The graph shows the inequality r > -12 It is greater than and not "greater than or equal to" because of the open circle at -12. The open circle means that -12 is NOT included. Knowing r > -12 which one of the answers is compatible with r > -12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the equation of the graph is r > -12, so make r the subject of the formula for each of the 4 options and see which one is r > -12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-r/4>3......which gives r<-12 as inequality sign will change , so this is wrong

OpenStudy (ranga):

I meant: Knowing r > -12 which one of the answers is NOT compatible with r > -12?

OpenStudy (ranga):

r > -12 To get the first choice add 9 to both sides: r + 9 > -3 So the first choice IS represented by the graph. r > -12 To get the second choice divide both sides by -4: When dividing by a negative number the sign will flip. So r/(-4) < -12/(-4) -r/4 < 3 but the second choice says -r/4 > 3 and so it is NOT represented by the graph. You can try the third and the fourth choice and you will find they are represented by the graph. So the answer is b.
