having trouble writing functions in a((x-h)^2)+k Write the quadratic function in the form, and give the vertex of its graph. g(x)= (2x^2)-12x+15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2((x^2)-6x)+15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2((x^2)-6x+((-6/2)^2))+15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2((x^2)-6x+9)+15+18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get stuck when completing the square (b/2)^2 and adding to the right side

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

I assume you know what a "perfect square trinomial" is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ax^2+bx+c

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... that would be a quadratic equation in standard form only

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYv-Pchyu0Y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2(x^2-6x+___)+15\] \[2(x^2-6x+9)+15-18\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so should be \[2(x-3)^2-3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks team

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jdoe0001 thanks for the video

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you had everything right but had to subtract the 18 not add :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ninab731 how do you get -18 in your first response

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well more so why is it negative when i have 2*9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i add inside the parenthesis i subtract? and when i subtract inside the parenthesis i add to the right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take 1/2 of the coefficient of x and square it. multiply by the outside factor 2, then add and subtract 2(-6/2)^2 =18 so u subtract the 18 yes!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SWEET! i got it thanks
