OpenStudy (falco276):

I have a few .MOV files that I really want to play but I can't open them with Windows Media Player, VLC player, or quick time because they say it dosen't recognize the format. I have also been trying to convert them to WMV or AVI but it's no good. :( Anybody have a solution? Here is the screen shot of my files:

Ever tried installing the k-lite codec pack to get more decoders? If someone encoded it with an odd format, you may need something like that. However, the fact that VLC won't open it does note bode well.

OpenStudy (falco276):

Really? Oh, ok thanks, listen can you leave me more info about this right now? because I need to go to bed right now and sleep. Will see your reply tommorow! :D

OpenStudy (falco276):

And any other OS member that would like to leave me more great sites to fix this issue will be happily appreciated!!! :D

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, the only other thing I can think of is use one of the media information tools, like: http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo Then you can find out what encoding the file has. If you have the right decoders, then something may be wrong with the file.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Try to use QuickTimePlayer to play it or download Bigasoft MOV Converter

OpenStudy (falco276):

@metrxqin Quick Time won't recognize that format. (.MOV)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Actually, MOV is the native format of QuickTime. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3775

OpenStudy (falco276):

really?

OpenStudy (falco276):

But everytime I open it with QT, it says it dosen't recognize the format. :?

OpenStudy (falco276):

Here is the error message I recived after I got it to open it with QT.

OpenStudy (falco276):

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That is why I said you need mediainfo. You need something that can find the real format.

OpenStudy (falco276):

In order for me to download this, which one should I download with, GUI, CLI, or DLL? (Note: I have Windows 7 64 bit.)

OpenStudy (falco276):

It still dosen't work. :/ I'm still getting the same error message.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, did you try a codec pack or mediainfo to see if you can either get the right codec or discover what is up with the file?

OpenStudy (falco276):

They say it could be not recognized or it's damaged. How do I repair those?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The not recognized part means the format of the file matches no known compression or encoding format. If mediainfo is saying that, then it may be a non-standard format that was designed for a special player or damage to the file. If a file is damaged, you may have to get a new copy. There is no easy way to fix a file. VLC has the ability to ignore minor damage. However, you already said that VLC will not play it. That means that is it is damaged, it is not minor damage.

OpenStudy (falco276):

So what can I do?

OpenStudy (falco276):

(sigh) Oh Well, thanks for the info. :)

OpenStudy (falco276):

How would I get a new copy of that file?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, where did you get it from?

OpenStudy (falco276):

Erm, I recorded it with a smart phone. and when I was importing it the computer saved it as a WMP format.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Hmmm... was it an Apple smart phone? That coulsd use MOV. Most others use 3GP or 3G2. Might just need something that supports those.

OpenStudy (falco276):

Oh, I never knew that.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Can you get the original file off the phone again?

OpenStudy (falco276):

Nope. Accedantally deleted it. And everytime I upload it on Youtube, it won't let me.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yah, that is a hard thing to deal with, Hmm... wait a sec. Yu might want to see if you can recover it from the phone. http://www.piriform.com/recuva http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

OpenStudy (falco276):

okay. :)

OpenStudy (falco276):

Thanks for the links but aren't there any links to where I can fix a video file?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I know of no way to fix a file that is so bad it is listed as an unrecognized format. But thse tools can do direct reads to a number of forms of media and may be able to read the original file off the phone, giving you another copy to work with that will hopefully be in better shape or the original format.

OpenStudy (falco276):

Okay, thanks. :)

OpenStudy (falco276):

Oh gosh. After downloading and opening Photo rec, it led me to a terminal. What do I do next?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

At the bottom of the PhotoRec page they have some links to a step by step and a guide to recovering an iPhone. I would read both first. Get an idea of use from the examples, then go after your files.

OpenStudy (falco276):

Okay. :)

OpenStudy (falco276):

Just to let you know, my I-phone was not jail broken.
