ANYONE?! please:) political, social and economic concerns facing the U.S. from the 1970s through the present.
What kind of a question is that? Narrow it down a bit. It's too broad.
sorry! what are some political, social and economic concerns facing the U.S. from the 1970s through the present? ^^ what i meant
@DonaldRoyMiller
That's a question for a class you're taking?
Its more like a review question. My teacher wants me to know this for a test
Okay. What's the title of the class you're taking? That'll help me know how to better discuss the question.
U.S History:)
Well, economically it seems that the country has changed quite a bit due to "globalization," the transfer of jobs from the US to other countries. We've gone from a manufacturing base to a service based economy, wouldn't you say?
Yeah i agree. also doesn't globalization also share political ties?
I don't believe so. Not in the sense of a political ideology. To me, it's just based on corporate interest in profit. Indeed, in the United States it's illegal for management not to try to "maximize profit." That seems to be an excuse for them to rip off both the workers within the business and the shareholders. (Not to mention the exploited labor their getting overseas.)
I guess they don't have it set up so that the students get together and talk about the class? I suppose that's what this Open Study site is supposed to be, although so far it looks to me like it should be called Do My Homework for Me.
Well I bet they do but I'm homeschooled so I have to teach myself I come on here to get help, yes a lot people just give the answers but I appreciate the people that actually help. Answers are great but I actually like learning and sometimes I need help.
I had a older bother that said we'd become a service based economy years ago, I questioned then and I question it now. To be service based you must have someone to serve, like a butler or maid. To be serviced based you must serve those with the "money" and that has always been the case even with manufacturing. What's occurred in the last 40 year's is inflation has been checked, was about 12% in 1980, but the workforce salaries and wages have stagnated and I don't believe it's entirely due to Globalization. The housing collapse of 2008 was because property values increased with inflation, doubled over the time period, and wages didn't which eventually caused property values to halve. The student debt today was unheard of in my day, 70's, and essentially imprison a person. My suggestion is use free sites like OCW and purchase texts online in subjects, some subject require lab's so as to develop research and development capabilities therefore some actual college courses may be needed. There's an old saying "a army marches on it's stomach" therefore if a person has to put so much time feeding himself they'll have little time for political manners especially with all the misinformation.
Hi Ken. I'm using service based in the economic sense. When we go to Wal-Mart or some other place, the employees are performing a service rather than manufacturing something. Same thing with McDonald's. I know you could say they are manufacturing sandwiches but essentially it's a service. I caught your message when I was about to sign off my computer for the day. I look forward to discussing more with you. Thanks for the well-considered reply.
Again to be of service you must be a service to someone. The one's you mention are actually limited to the lower, enslaved, class but if no can afford a service then the service is useless. The reason minimum wage hasn't increased in 40 years is because no ones salary or wage increased in that time. When I worked as a Electrical Engineer, 40 years ago, there was a policy that you kept your salary to yourself and with this policy professionals were on there own when it comes to income. I've seem some published starting salary for EE and its about the same as 40 year ago while at that time there was little college debt. As I said before all jobs are service and tend more today to enslave then in previous history. When I say enslave I mean people have to have food and shelter and try to obtain what they can depending on their ability, but there seems to be a game change giving people the illusion of something people once had.
That's a nice coincidence. I'm interested in electrical engineering.
