how are contractile vacuoles different from other types of vacuoles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A contractile vacuole is a cellular organelle involved in osmoregulation. It is found predominantly in protists and in unicellular algae. It was previously known as pulsatile or pulsating vacuole. In other words this is an active vacuole for unicellular organisms that undergo a lot of change in their environment's tonicity. This is important in conserving water. Regular vacuole are an overarching category of organelles for storing water and nutrients.
