Why do you think one of Hitler's first steps toward German expansion focused on Austria?

Well, it was a popular move: http://www.netplaces.com/world-war-ii/fanning-the-flames/hitler-takes-austria.htm But also look into where Hitler was born.

Yeah. Hitler was a nationalist, so he wanted to establish Germany as a nation. (Think I've got that right.) Other territories were conquered for two other reasons: one was to settle old scores from WWI, wherein the Germans wanted Alsace and Lorraine. Second, Nazi philosophy was that they were the master race and the other "inferior" races should serve them. That's what he had in mind for Poland, which he got, and Russia, which he didn't.
