Evaluate –7(x – 4y) when x = –4 and y = –6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-140, I believe

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The first step is to replace the variables with their values. -7(x - 4y) = = -7[-4 - 4(-6)] Now start from the inside, and multiply togehter 4 * (-6)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

\(= -7[-4 - \color{red}{4(-6)}]\) \(= -7[-4 - \color{red}{(-24)}]\) Now you change the subtraction of a negative into a sum: \(= -7(-4 + 24)\) Now you do the sum inside the parentheses: \(= -7(20)\) Finally, you multiply: \(=-140\)
