What immediate effect did the fall of the Roman Empire have on Europe?

OpenStudy (gatorgirl):

The loss of a strong central government--which was indeed a very gradual process--forced people to rely on alternative sources of authority, such as the church, and barbarian leaders. Eventually, by the ninth/tenth century, many European peasants had to rely on local nobles or barons for protection from the new barbarians--the Vikings. The peasants fled into the fortresses or castles of the local barons, who exploited the peasants' dependence to dominate them, giving rise to serfdom.
