***Please please help!! I give medals!! Which of the following was an incentive for profit to settle the Mississippi Valley region? Availability of fish and furs Abundance of Native Americans to convert to Catholicism Mildness of the temperature of the region Excitement of the wilderness

OpenStudy (gatorgirl):

"The French set up their first permanent settlement in North America in Quebec in 1608. Initially, the French focused on fishing, fur trading, and missionary work, converting Native Americans into Catholicism. They expanded their settlements into the Mississippi Valley Region, which was partially claimed by the British. The French set up several forts to protect their profitable fur trade and their claims into the region. The French settlements grew slowly, so the Native Americans were not pushed off their land as they were in British settlements. Unlike the Spanish, French did not try to change the Indian customs, which led to a more peaceful coexistence between the French and the Native American tribes."

The paragraph states that the forts were set up to support the fur trade, so C should be the right answer. Looking closely, the reference to missionary work was "initially" so we are not confused that they were still converting natives when they settled in the Mississippi Valley.
